Tips
- Set your destination ahead
Use GO's Advance Destination Setting to enter where you are going before the taxi arrives. The app description says this can spare you from explaining the destination to the driver, which may be useful if you cannot communicate in Japanese. Check the destination carefully before confirming your ride, especially when choosing among similar place names.
- Check the arriving taxi
When your taxi arrives, use the Confirmation Number described in the app listing and give it to the driver before getting in. This is intended to help you identify the taxi you requested. Keep the number available as you wait, and confirm the match rather than relying only on the vehicle's appearance.
- Review payment choices
GO Pay lets you add a credit card in the app and choose cashless payment in the taxi; the listing says it is not available in every taxi. Check whether GO Pay is offered for your ride before relying on it, and have another way to pay available when the option is not shown.
Menu names follow the developer's help pages and can differ slightly between versions and phones.
How we write the digest
Each week we check the Google Play listings of the apps our readers use most: the version number, the update date and the developer's What's new notes. When an app has a new version, we put the developer's update notes and the listing details together on one page, in plain words, with a link to the official Google Play listing. Google and most developers release updates in stages over several days, so a version listed here may not have reached your phone yet. Select Weekly is an independent site and is not affiliated with any developer. This page doesn't read your phone or your Google account, and nothing is installed from here.
FAQ
Is this the official list of GO / Taxi app for Japan visit changes?
No. This is an independent editorial summary and is not affiliated with GO Inc. The app's Google Play page is the authority for the official listing and change information. Check that page for the latest details before installing, and use the app's own support options for questions about your account or a particular ride.
Why does Google Play show Open instead of Update?
Google Play may show Open when the latest build is already installed, or when an update has not yet reached your account through a staged rollout. Check the app's Play page again later if you are expecting an update. Availability can vary, so the button shown by Google Play is the practical guide for your account.
Can I use GO with a non-Japanese phone number?
Yes. GO's description says registration with a non-Japanese mobile number is available. The app is intended for taxi trips in Japan, and its listed service covers all 47 prefectures. For a particular trip, check the app's coverage and available taxi options in your area before depending on it.
