Messenger just got an update. Did yours?
Issue 1 · Oct 13–19, 2026. This build's notes cover general maintenance, while Messenger brings chats, calls, shared albums, and photo and file sharing together. If Google Play offers it, it's worth installing now for those everyday tools; the details are on the next screen.

Start NowWhat changed this week
These are the three changes in Messenger 582.0.0.61.92 that stand out in the developer's update notes and on its Google Play listing this week.
- 01General maintenance and stability work
The build's notes cover general maintenance. Messenger remains a place for everyday chats and calls, with several ways to share moments and keep conversations expressive.
- 02Worth using: shared chat albums
Create a shared album in a group chat to organize photos and videos around a trip, celebration, or other moment you want to revisit together.
- 03Worth using: photos and large files
Messenger supports clearer photo sharing and lets you send Word, PDF, or Excel files up to 100MB directly inside a chat.
Our call on whether to update, and the link to the official Google Play listing, are on this issue's Messenger page.

Tips
- Keep key moments together
When a group chat is full of pictures from the same trip or celebration, create a shared album to organize those photos and videos. It gives participants a dedicated collection to look back through rather than leaving every image scattered among messages. Choose an occasion your group will recognize, then share related moments there.
- Edit a message you sent
If you spot a mistake after sending a message, Messenger describes an option to edit it for up to 15 minutes after sending. Open the relevant conversation and look for the message's available actions. For something you sent to the wrong place, the app also describes an unsend option; check the choices shown for that message.
- Choose a disappearing-message duration
For an end-to-end encrypted chat where you want messages to disappear after they have been read, Messenger lets you choose how long they stick around. Agree on a duration that suits the conversation, and remember that this is a chat-specific choice rather than a general replacement for ordinary messages.
Menu names follow the developer's help pages and can differ slightly between versions and phones.
How we write the digest
Each week we check the Google Play listings of the apps our readers use most: the version number, the update date and the developer's What's new notes. When an app has a new version, we put the developer's update notes and the listing details together on one page, in plain words, with a link to the official Google Play listing. Google and most developers release updates in stages over several days, so a version listed here may not have reached your phone yet. Select Weekly is an independent site and is not affiliated with any developer. This page doesn't read your phone or your Google account, and nothing is installed from here.
FAQ
Is this the official list of Messenger changes?
No. This is an independent site and is not affiliated with Meta Platforms, Inc. The Messenger page on Google Play is the authority for the app and its listed changes. Check that page for the current listing and whether Google Play offers an install option for your device.
Why does Google Play show Open instead of Update?
Google Play may show Open when the latest build is not being offered to your account or device at that moment; availability can also vary during a staged rollout. Check the Messenger page again later. If the button still says Open, you can launch the app as usual and wait for Google Play to offer the newer build.
Can I use Messenger without a phone number?
The app description says you can find and connect with friends and family on Facebook and Messenger without a phone number. Messenger also supports calls and chats, and you can connect with people you meet in person by scanning their Messenger QR code or sharing yours through a link.
