Google Keep - Notes and lists: set it up right the first time

Get it from Google Play if it isn't on your phone yet, then change three settings before you start using it.

What it's for

Google Keep is a note-taking and list app for capturing thoughts, photos, and voice memos, then organizing them with colors, labels, and search. On a new phone, it gives you a place to collect everyday reminders and lists, with syncing across your devices when connected.

Official listing by Google LLC

Install the official Google Keep app from Google Play, and check that Google LLC is shown as the developer.

After it installs: three settings

  1. 01Choose useful reminders

A reminder can bring a note or grocery list back to mind at the right time, helping turn a saved item into a timely prompt.

Look in the note’s options for reminders
  2. 02Organize notes with labels

Labels and colors help separate lists, plans, and quick thoughts, making it easier to browse or search for the note you need.

Look in the app for labels and note color options
  3. 03Set up quick capture

Widgets on phones and tablets, and tiles or complications on Wear OS, can make it quicker to capture a thought or reach a note.

Look in Keep and your device settings for widgets or Wear OS tiles

Path as given in the developer's help pages; menu names can differ slightly between versions and phones.

Common problem

Can't find a note? Check that you are using the account where you created it, then search Keep by a word or label you remember. If notes are not appearing across devices, connect to the internet and allow time for syncing before trying again.
