Substack: set it up right the first time
Get it from Google Play if it isn't on your phone yet, then change three settings before you start using it.
What it's for
Substack connects readers with creators, ideas, and communities through writing, videos, podcasts, and live formats. On a new phone, the app gives you a place to explore its feed, find writers or podcasters you like, and follow them through free subscriptions or paid options.
Get the app
Official listing by Substack Inc.
Get the official Substack app from Google Play, and check that the developer name is Substack Inc. before installing.
After it installs: three settings
- 01Choose creators to follow
Subscribing helps bring work from writers, artists, and podcasters you enjoy into your Substack experience; review whether each creator offers free or paid options.
Look in the app for creator pages and subscription options - 02Explore different formats
The app includes writing, videos, podcasts, clips, and read-aloud articles, so checking the feed can help you find a format that fits the moment.
Feed - 03Find live spaces
Livestreams and live group chats offer a way to connect with creators and supporters in real time when a creator makes those spaces available.
Look in the app's feed for livestreams and live group chats
Path as given in the developer's help pages; menu names can differ slightly between versions and phones.
Common problem
Can't sign in? Start by checking that you are using the account details you intended for Substack, then close and reopen the app and try again. If the issue continues, use the account-help options available through the app or Google Play listing rather than sharing your password with anyone.
