WhatsApp Messenger: what changed

The main decision concerns how much conversation a newcomer receives. Alongside that choice, the calling additions offer more flexibility over which device you use, how people join, and whom you see.

What changed

  1. 01Offer newcomers a recent conversation catch-up

Think about the content before choosing to share it. A discussion about arrangements could help an invited friend catch up, while personal exchanges deserve more care. The useful addition is the choice itself: consider what the incoming member needs to know before passing along the group's recent messages.

  2. 02Switch devices during a group conversation

This can suit a conversation that begins away from a desk and continues once you are sitting down. WhatsApp already brings messaging to phones and computers; call transfers give group conversations another way to fit around where you are. Look for the transfer option when you want to change devices during a call.

  3. 03Control call entry and participant emphasis

These are two separate controls worth knowing about before your next group conversation. The waiting room concerns entry through a call link; pinning concerns the person you want to see more prominently. For a family discussion or shared catch-up, consider which participant would be most useful to keep clearly visible.

Should you update now?

Our callCheck one setting

Install this release, then pay attention to the recent-history choice the next time you invite someone into an existing group. Sharing earlier messages changes what that person can see. The call additions are useful too, especially if you move between a phone and computer or arrange conversations through links.

Worth knowing

WhatsApp has no subscription fees, but internet data charges may apply through your provider. A phone number is needed, with SMS verification used in some regions. If you have a Wear OS watch, WhatsApp supports replies, conversations, and calls from your wrist. Updating the existing app through Google Play keeps your messages, data, and settings in place.
